From Office to HomeCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comIf you have been in the business world, the transition from going to work in an office every day to operating a home business may be quite astounding. After all, you are used to getting up in the morning, dressing, and heading into a building to work, and now you have no time clock to punch. Although that is a good thing for many, others may find the transition quite difficult and see it as a reason to sleep in rather than get up early. Of course, you aren't going to get up as early as you did when you had to drive to work, but you still need to develop a schedule for yourself. Another transition that may be difficult is that of making certain that friends and family members understand you are still working and are not free to run their errands, babysit their children, or go shopping with them during your working hours. That doesn't mean that you can't go out to lunch on occasion because even with a home business, you will take time out for lunch and a break from working. What you don't want to do is get into the habit of doing more relaxing than working during the day or you will find yourself seeming to work twenty-four hours a day trying to do what you should have done earlier in the day. Working at home after years of working in an office means that you must learn the concept of time management. You no longer have someone telling you, directly or indirectly, what to do at any given time. Even if your former position involved supervision or management, you had to answer to someone else for your time. Now that you have a home business, you have to plan your day based upon the workload that you have with no one else to help you. It may take a little bit of time for you to perfect your time management so that you know exactly how much you can accomplish in the time frame that you have allotted for its completion. In the beginning, you may work longer hours in order to accommodate that, but once you develop a system, you may be able to work fewer hours than you did when you were working for someone else and make the same or better pay. The key to making a smooth transition from office to home office is to take it slowly so that you don't take on more work than you can handle in the course of an eight-hour day. You don't want to work more hours to accomplish the same thing you did when you were out to work, so you need to learn how to work efficiently so that you will have more time for yourself and your family. Choosing to Outsource Work OverloadsCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comOutsourcing is a common practice with businesses today, whether they are home-based or brick and mortar. For the home business operator, outsourcing can be a great way to bring in extra income by taking on additional work. You find this method used frequently with those who perform office-related functions as well as in the freelance writing and editing fields. If you choose to outsource any of your additional work, you must be sure that those you choose are equal to your abilities and knowledge or you will find that correcting the errors takes more time than it would take if you did the work yourself. If you choose to use outsourcing in your business, remember that the final product falls upon you. Your client/customers depends upon you to deliver a finished, quality product, so if you hire someone else to do the job for you, it will be your responsibility to make sure that any outsourced work meets your same high standards. In some business, the clients know that there are others sharing the workload, but that does not mean that they expect any less than they expect if the same person is doing all the work. Another thing a business owner must consider when outsourcing work is the client for whom he does work. Some clients, especially in the creative fields, tell you directly that they do not accept outsourcing. You could try to come in under, but you are taking a chance. If someone doesn't want their work outsourced, do not expect that they will be unable to tell the difference, and if they detect that you have outsourced any of their project, there's a possibility that they will refuse to pay you. Since you violated the terms of the agreement, there is nothing you can do. It seems fussy of the buyer, but remember, they are the ones paying, so they have the right to decide to whom they wish to give their money. In other fields such as accounting and office functions, the clients do not have such a hard line on outsourcing. The other question arises whether you can make money by outsourcing instead of doing the work yourself, and the answer to that question is simple. You are being paid a set amount for a project or portions of a project. If you outsource the work, you are going to pay less to that person than you are being paid, so the difference is your profit. Think of it like a company hiring someone through a temporary help agency—the employee is paid, for example, $10 per hour, but you are billed at least $15 per hour for their services. Outsourcing projects works in reverse – you charge less than you are being paid. Building a Client/Customer BaseCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comOne of the most important parts of a home business is certainty that you always have enough work to keep the income flow steady. Doing that means that before you ever start your business, you have to begin an advertising campaign so that you have someplace to begin. Don't quit your job and go in with blinders on your eyes or you will fail and be right back working for someone else. You should have a constant flow of potential customers or repeat customers, depending on the kind of business you operate. Some types of home businesses have guaranteed repeat business, while others are usually just occasional jobs. In order to assure that you always have a constant flow of work, make sure that you always have a database of customers/clients. You don't want to spam anyone, but if you have someone who has contacted you in the past about a project or you have worked with someone in the past, you can drop them a short email to see if there is anything else they need you to help them complete. The key is always keeping your contact list up to date and staying in contact with people you assist. You may get into the habit of offering bonuses for referrals that ultimately become one of your customers. Although advertising is an important part of your business, some fields don't require it simply because of the nature of the work. Transcriptionists, for example, don't require a large database of customers since most of that work will come through the courts, doctors, or lawyers, depending on the type of transcription you do. In most cases, these fields will not require advertising because your credentials alone will keep the clients coming back again. Even if your business doesn't require ongoing advertising, you will need to do some initial advertising in order to gain the momentum you need to get your business operating efficiently. You don't have to spend a great deal of money on advertising, but you must keep in mind that sometimes the free internet sites do not afford the same success rate as those that require a fee. Even if it's a small fee, you will have more success than with a free advertising site. Other ways of advertising include signature lines in your email, link exchange programs, and making sure that your website is submitted to as many of the search engines as possible within your budget. Some free submission services are available, but your site will not reach as many search engines as those charging a fee. Remember the old saying that it takes money to make money, so you have to invest a little of your own money if you expect to make your business the success that you want it to be. Benefits of a Home BusinessCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comIf you have always been the kind of person who went to work every day and never gave a thought to the idea of working at home, you may not understand the concept behind opening a home business. In fact, some people enjoy going out to work because it gives them an opportunity to get out of the house and have some adult conversation. However, if you are one of those who likes the idea of not having to fight with traffic every morning and every evening, the idea of a home business may be appealing. Of course, before you make the plunge, you want to know how you can benefit except for avoiding rush hour traffic. One of the major benefits from a home business besides avoidance of rush hour traffic is that of having to wake up in the morning and get dressed for work. With a home business, you can work in your pajamas if you want—at least until you have a client coming or you have to go see a client. That saves a great deal of wear and tear on clothing and shoes. It also saves wear and tear on your car since you don't have to go out every day and fight in the traffic. Even if you visit clients on a regular basis, you can schedule the visits during those times of the day when traffic is lighter. If you're like most people, you tend to become very lax about bringing your lunch to work. That means you spend money eating lunch in the cafeteria or surrounding restaurants, a cost of perhaps $30 or more every week. Working at home means you don't have to go anyplace for lunch but your kitchen, and though you may have to buy extra food for lunches to accommodate eating at home every day, the cost will be far less than what you were spending when you were working away from home. Although you don't want to get into the habit or doing errands during the day, if something is important, you can take care of it instead of having to ask a friend of relative to do it for you. This is especially true of taking your children to doctor's appointments or picking them up from school when they are sick. You can also take the occasional school trip with your children by simply planning your work schedule around the trip. In addition, you can make those amusement park trips during the week when they are not so crowded. Keep in mind that it will take some commitment to work a business at home, but if you want to experience all of the above benefits, it's time to get started planning. Babysitting: A Home Business For EveryoneCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comEveryone Needs Money In a modern capitalist society, everyone needs money in order to survive and thrive. No matter what your age or nationality, you need your money in order not only to provide for your basic needs, but also for the things that you want. This can mean different things for different people, but the common thread is this – we all need and want certain things, and we all need money to get them. Work is the primary way through which we earn the money that we need in order to live. However, many of us struggle with our finances anyway, even with stable work. When this happens, we may opt to do get involved in some side jobs or start a small home business. One such home business is babysitting. Babysitting: Why Is It A Good Business? First, babysitters are almost always in demand. Parents are people too – sometimes they can get worn out by the demands of parenthood, and need some time away just to refresh themselves. Understandably, however, parents are loathe to leave their children unattended, even at home. The net result is that most parents simply don’t get to do the things that they would like to do, because they have to be responsible and care for their children. Enter you, the babysitter. If a good, responsible babysitter is available, most parents would opt to shell out a few extra bucks in order to be able to find time for themselves. Second, being a babysitter isn’t that hard. As a babysitter, your duties will be simple. You will “fill in” for the parent while they are away. Thus, you will take responsibility for the children for a relatively short period of time. While this may seem like a tall task, it doesn’t have to be so. Even if you don’t have experience with children, it shouldn’t be hard for you to learn. Listen carefully to any special instructions that the parents might give you, keep an alert eye on the children, and you shouldn’t have much trouble. Don’t allow yourself to be too distracted and you will be fine. Third, being a babysitter pays well. While you might not think that what you get is a lot, it actually is compared to the small amount of work that you will be doing. Unless the children are very young and have special needs, you will mostly have a cakewalk. If you love kids, the job might even be fun for you. In fact, for some people, babysitting isn’t as much a job as it is a personal joy. If you love kids, can carry out a few simple instructions, and are responsible, babysitting is for you. You may find that it is one of the most rewarding and remunerative things that you will ever do.
