home business limited a person to professionals such as accountants, trades such as
hairdressing, or for those so inclined, a day care center at home. With the internet at our
disposal in the 21st century, it's much easier to start a home business that will not cost you
a great deal of money during the start up phase. In addition, you have a much wider
choice of occupations from which to choose.

While making a decision about a home-based business, you have to consider the odds of
success. The reasoning for this is because there are many home-based business that are so
popular that the market has become saturated. Certainly with millions of surfers on the
internet, you may think that isn't a problem, but that depends how far you want to expand
your global business. For example, if you are a writer, you may not care if your clients
are in China as long as you can arrange delivery and payment, but if you are doing crafts,
you may not want to ship all over the world. Even an accountant may choose not to
expand his or her global horizons beyond the home country because that is where he
holds his license to practice.

Start up costs are deterrents to your business. If you are on a limited budget, you may
also be limited in the type of business you can start. This is one reason many people
looking to start a home business using the internet tend to turn to either network
marketing or affiliate programs, thinking that they are better than the other million people
who have tried and failed. These programs are usually free to join, but they take a great
deal of work in order to make them worthwhile. If you are the type of person who doesn't
mind spending hours a day just sitting at the computer placing ads and joining lists so that
you can advertise your website, these may be a good opportunity.

For those who already have the equipment they need to start their business, the highest
cost is going to be advertising. Accountants, secretaries, and even tutors can use the
internet to their advantage. If you already have a business and would like to make it more
of a home business, the internet is at your disposal. The important thing is to do some
research before you begin so that you know all of the things that you have to do before
you even begin operating your business such as taxes, business licenses, and any
insurance you want wish to carry because of the nature of the business.

Preparing Your Home for Business Operations

Once you decide that you want a home business and are ready to make the commitment
to making it work, you need an idea. The last thing you want to do is just come up with
something off the top of your head. This is something that you want to research and
spend time deciding. Even if you are in a profession that will make it easy for you to
leave the office and bring it home with you, make sure you know all of the advantages
and disadvantages of doing that. For instance, an accountant with small children at home
may want to think of another idea or plan to continue putting the children in day care.
You cannot have clients meet with you to discuss their finances if your children are
running around the house. Not only is it distracting, it's also unprofessional to meet with
clients while other family members are occupied with leisure activities.

What is the solution? Besides putting your children in daycare as you did when working
outside the home, you can choose to meet your clients at their home or place of business.
This may not always be possible, so you want to have an area of your home designated
for your business. If you have clients as in the above example, you want to make sure that
you have a private entrance into your office so that you don't have to ask family members
to leave when you meet clients. The area doesn't have to be a large one, but it should be
away from the noises of family life. In addition, your family members must understand
that they are not to disturb you when you meeting with clients. Let your spouse handle
the children while you conduct business.

Depending on what business you choose, you want to have all of the equipment that you
need before you begin operating. If your business is some type of office, you want to
make sure that you have a computer and all of the components to handle the work that
you accept. Don't open your business figuring you will buy the equipment once the orders
come in. The reasons for that are that you may find some of the equipment you need may
not be available and you will need to wait. It sounds good to say that you will get the
clients first, but that's definitely not the way to approach it. That doesn't mean that you
can't begin to advertise, but don't accept any work until you have everything in place and
are ready to operate.

In short, have all of your preliminary work completed before you begin the operation of
your business. The day you open your doors, whether physical or virtual, you should be
ready to take on any clients/customers who need your services.

After you have conducted all the research and have come to a final decision about the
business you wish to operate from your home, you need to prepare your home for the
operation of a business. The first thing you want to do is an inventory of equipment you
already own that you will need to operate your business. By taking this preliminary
inventory, you avoid buying things you don't need as well as missing things that you
don't already have. You certainly do not want to start operating under the premise that
you have everything you need only to find something missing.

Another important aspect of preparing for your home business, and even more important
that your equipment inventory, is a designated area to work. Depending on the type of
business, you may need a small, private area to use as an office or you may be able to
utilize space that is already being used. If you don't have an extra room that you can use,
consider partitioning the area you already have to afford privacy when you need to work.
This will work better than an open area as it will send the message to other family
members that you are working and not available for conversation or other non-emergency
interruptions. By developing this concept from the start, you avoid the delay that is
caused when friends find out you are working at home and think you can socialize any
time of the day.

You need to develop your own time frame so that you know what you need to do and
during what time of the day or night. Depending on the type of business, you may be able
to operate only during normal business hours, but that is not true of all home businesses.
You must be prepared for the possibility that you will not be able to operate a 9-5
business all of the time. While you are developing your business, you will probably find
that you are working 12-16 hours a day, but that will slow down after you have
everything in place.

The most important thing you need to do when preparing your home for business
operations is having all of your legal and tax information completed. Although you may
not need to file taxes until you start making money, you want to have everything in place
from the beginning. You also want to have an account, attorney, and tax advisor either on
retainer or available for any questions you have or any forms or other business-related
issues that you need prepared. Remember, once your business begins making a profit,
you will not have the time to start looking for the professionals to help you, so it's
important to include that in your pre-operational preparations.

Making a Home Business Work

It seems easy enough to say that you want to work at home for any number of reasons,
but the key is making your business work. That means firstly that you must treat your
business as a business. Do not use it as a means for spending more time on leisure
activities or it will not work for you. There may be some types of homes businesses that
do not require your presence during certain times, so you may be able to fill those hours
with other activities. The problem is, however, if you get into the habit of doing other
things during the day, you will find that your business takes all of your evening hours.
That means you then have less time with your family that you would if you worked
outside of the home.

You have to commit to making your business work, and that means making it your
priority during certain hours. Even if you are a freelance transcriber of medical or court
records, you have to be available during the hours when your clients may require your
assistance. Even writers and editors need to be available during certain times in case of a
last minute rush job for a high level client. Having a home-based business does not mean
that your life is your own, it simply means that you do not punch a time clock or report to
anyone at a certain time. It also means that you can work in whatever you want to wear,
but it DOES NOT mean that you can put a client's work on hold to go to lunch with your
best friend.

If your business is going to work and provide replacement income from a full-time job,
you have to be willing to make some commitments and sacrifices. Once you have your
business up and running, you may have some extra time that you can devote to doing
things that you like to do. However, while you are building the basics of your business,
you need to be there to watch it and follow through on everything. Failure to do that will
doom your business before you even get very far.

Not everyone has the ability to operate a home business. Some people do not have
enough time management skills to organize their day for this kind of a venture. These
people need to be told what to do and when to do it as is the case in a regular work
environment. If you are one of these people, then a home business is not for you because
there will no one to tell you what time to start, go to lunch, or finish. You will need to
organize everything yourself, and you alone will have to see things to completion. Make
sure you can handle that aspect first.

When you start your home business, you need to make sure that you know the regulations
of your neighborhood. Depending where you live, there may be zoning laws that forbid
certain kinds of businesses from operating in your neighborhood. The reasons may vary,
but in most cases the rule pertains to the fact that certain types of businesses generate
additional traffic in the neighborhood.

You may be well advised to check into the zoning laws in your neighborhood before you
decide on the business you want to operate. You don't want to take the time to make all of
the arrangements, including any additional skills training, only to find out that your
business of choice is forbidden in your neighborhood. Also, keep in mind that if you
move to another neighborhood, what didn't work in your former neighborhood may be
allowed in your new one and visa versa. It depends upon the size of the neighborhood
and the way the streets are set up as well as the amount of property you have. Of course,
if you live in a rural community, you probably will be able to operate any business that
you want.

In most neighborhoods, day care centers are not prevented from opening, not only
because they will benefit the entire neighborhood but also because any traffic they create
is short term. Other businesses such as accounting and secretarial are borderline since
they may involve only a client picking up their work. At the same time, if everyone
comes at once, it can cause a problem. If you're faced with that, perhaps suggest that you
will make appointments for pick up or will deliver the work yourself in order to obtain a
variance to the zoning code for your businesses. Sometimes psychologists may want to
have an office in their home, but this may be one of the cases where it would not be
allowed since it's possible to have several people waiting at the same time. A beauty
salon may be another questionable business in some neighborhoods.

Keep in mind that none of the rules is etched in stone, but you have to obtain a variance
in order to circumvent them. Don't make the mistake of opening a business and thinking
that you can keep it low key because someone will find out and complain – there is one in
every neighborhood. You don't want to invest all of that time and money only to find out
that you have to shut down because you didn't obtain the proper licenses and variances
before you began operating. Of course, if you are creative and are operating a freelance
business that involves only you and your computer, you will not need to concern yourself
with zoning laws.

If you're looking for the type of business that offers ongoing income, there are several
options that you may want to consider. Though most people think of network or multi-
level marketing when the term residual income is mentioned, these are not the only types
of business that can offer ongoing income. Although it may not be the true sense of
residual income, any sales-oriented business that doesn't require in person contact can be
a form of residual income. In other words, if you have a website where customers can go
and buy products they need, you have a limited form of residual income because the
money is going to continue as long as the website is up and running and the products are
available for purchase.

On the other end of the scope, true residual income is that which goes on even when you
are no longer around to monitor it. The most common type of business that offers residual
income is that of network or multi-level marketing such as Amway, HerbalLife, and
many more. This type of business involves recruiting and training other people to join a
sales distribution network that operates underneath a sponsor. Since the sponsor is paid a
portion of what each person in his organization sells, once the network is running at peak
efficiency, it will provide an ongoing income to each person as it escalates to the top
person in the organization. The highest income is from those you personally sponsor, but
you also are paid from the other branches of the organization.

Although network marketing is the truest form of residual income, investments such as
real estate and high-level stocks, bonds, and mutual funds also fall into the same
category. With real estate, it's much easier to see it as residual income because as long as
there is a need for housing, you will have the ability to derive income from rental
property. If you have enough income that you can hire someone to manage the properties
you own, then you can relax and let the properties make money for you just like you do
in network marketing. Securities will vary with the market, but real estate doesn't
customarily decline in value. Unless the housing market becomes very depressed as it
was in the late 1970s and middle 1980s when mortgage interest rates were hovering close
to 25%, the price of real estate is not likely to decline in value. Once you have your
properties, and as long as you keep them well maintained, you will always have income
from there, and after your death, the income will flow to your family if you set it up that
way. Other investments can work the same way, but real estate is by far the less volatile.

Like any business, your home business depends on profits in order to be successful. Of
course, the overhead is not going to be as high for an at home business as it would be if
you had a brick and mortar business, but there are still some expenses that must be
overcome before your business can claim a profit. Some expenses that you have even in a
home business include taxes, insurance, electricity, phone (whether land line or mobile0,
internet service, and all of the office supplies that you use in the daily operation of your
business such as printer supplies and software for your computer. Even if you don't use
your computer for your business, there will be other expenses connected to its daily
operation.

On the other hand, if you have a job such as a day care center in your home, the expenses
are going to be much higher because you have other types of expenses – licensing, food,
exterminating, fire inspections, training, and much more. You may be able to offset it by
raising your rates, but you still have to remain competitive or you will lose the children
you have, which will really cut into your profit margin. You have to be able to set your
pricing so that you make a profit but not so high that you price yourself right out of
business.

That brings us to the point of this article – goal setting is an important part of increasing
your profits. It means that you develop a plan that will allow you to increase your profits
without substantially raising your prices. What you want to do is make a list of all of your
expenses and see if there are places where you can make cuts in order to reduce your
expenses. Profit involves the difference between income and expenses, so to create a
higher profit margin, you have to increase income or decrease expenses. If you prices are
lower than others in the same market as your business, you may get by with raising prices
so that you are more in line with what everyone else in your area is charging. On the
other end of the scope, if you are already charging prices in line with others in the same
industry, the only way to increase profit is to lower expenses.

Another way to increase income without raising prices is to increase your customer base.
Of course, if you already have all the work you can handle, this is not feasible unless you
are able to outsource some of the work to others, thus still generating some additional
income for yourself. After all, you are not going to pay someone the same amount that
you are being paid. This is a very common practice in freelance writing and is an efficient
way to take on more work and increase income without raising prices.
