Home Business: What You Need To Know About Starting Your Own E-storeCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comYou don’t really need a truckload of money to start your own home business. In fact, with just a few hundreds of dollars, you can already start your own e-store. The good thing about starting an e-store is that you don’t really need to keep lots of inventory. As long as you can deliver all your orders on time, nobody has to know that the item that you are selling is not yet in your possession. What is really important about setting up an e-store is that you have a good site which is easy to navigate, a reliable payment system and your have a courier that can deliver your wares fast. Choosing what to sell in your e-store Breaking into the online business is not really easy. There are millions of online stores that are selling different types of good and services out there and if you are not selling something unique, you will probably be lost among the multitudes of e-stores that are selling generic items. If you really want to succeed in the online business, you must find something unique to sell. Of course it’s not easy to find something that is truly unique these days but, if you can find something that people would want to buy, then, you are in business! When choosing what to sell in your e-store, consider the source of your supply first. It will not do you any good if you sell something that is unique and when somebody does purchase your goods, you will not be able to deliver the goods on time. Always remember that it is alright if you do not have physical possession of the goods that you are selling online but it is definitely not cool if you cannot deliver what you promise. If you want to stay in the online business, make sure that you have ready access to the things that you are selling online. Always bear in mind that when you lose a customer, you most likely not going to get that person back. According to studies, 95% of the people who shop online never come back to an e-store that gives them bad service. Another thing that you must remember when choosing the items that you sell online are that these items must be of good quality and they are exactly what you describe them to be. Never attempt to gloss up your product descriptions if you do not want to into trouble. Note that a lot of clients would return the items that they bought online because these items did not correspond to the description given. Once your clients start returning your products and giving your site bad reviews, your business will suffer and you lose a lot of money. Home Business: Gaining Control Over Your Business ExpensesCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comControlling your business expenses is important to keep your business in the right track. If you happen to be engage in a home business that requires you purchase large amount of supplies, you need to have a system to track down purchases and other expenses. To do this, you might want to get one of those computer accounting programs. The good thing about using a computer program to records all your transactions is that it is easier to you and is more likely to be accurate than recording your transactions manually. Organizing your records Your computer accounting program will not be able to help you if you cannot keep track of all your transactions. To keep track of your business dealings, always keep the receipts of all your purchases. You might want to buy a binder where you can keep all your receipts and your bills. Be sure to keep all your bills and receipts in a safe place where you can easily find them when you need to check something. When keeping track of your inventory, it would be a good idea to input all your incoming supplies in your computer and then update it regularly. If you are selling goods, you might want to get one of those computer programs that will automatically update your inventory files as soon as you sell something. Tracking the levels of your inventory is very important so that you will able to gauge when you should order for more inventory. Always remember that when you are selling goods, you must always have enough supply to offer to your customers. Keep track of all your accounts payable by keeping a record. Make a schedule of your payables so that you will be overwhelmed with all the bills at the beginning or at the end of the month. For instance, if you purchase your goods on a term, make sure that you schedule your other payables in such a way that it will not full on the same dates. If you are scheduled to pay your utilities during the first week of the month, you might to schedule your other payables somewhere in the middle part of the month so that you will have enough time to accumulate funds. When scheduling your payables, you might want to keep separate envelopes for each payable. Make sure that money that is intended to pay for certain payables are not used for other purposes. For instances, if you have money set aside to pay for your supplies, that money should never be used to pay for the amortization. Once you start mixing up your funds and using them for different purposes other than what they were originally intended, you may not be able to replenish it fast enough to beat the billing period. Having Your Family Pitch In for Your Home BusinessCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comThere are many things that you probably enjoy doing as a family. You know that spending time together being with each other is often a very important part of raising a family, so you know that you can always be on the lookout for bigger and better projects that you can do as a family. Probably, part of the reason that you are looking to be working at home might be indeed that you would like to be able to spend more time with your family, so having them help out with your home business might be a way to fulfill all of these things at once. However, how do you keep the fun in the family business, and not allow your family to be even more stressed? Here are some tips to getting your family involved in your home business, without hurting people’s feelings or making a mess out of anything. Be Patient Remember that even though this might be your particular dream, that doesn’t meant that it is the dream of everyone in your family. If your family is not as excited about the project as you are, this doesn’t mean that they love you less, it simply means that this isn’t at the forefront of what they want to do with their lives. Try not to stress out about this, instead, try to recognize that they love you and they want what is best for you. See if you can get them involved in small ways to make them happy, and remember that if they don’t like what you are doing with your business, it isn’t the end of the world. You aren’t doing this for them, you are doing it for yourself, and the bottom line is that you have to be sure to be happy, even if they don’t like it. However, even if they don’t seem thrilled about your business to start with, remember that there are ways to help them come around. Give them small tasks to do at the start so that it isn’t overwhelming. Also, the most important thing that you can do to get your family more involved in your home business is to talk to them about what you are doing and why it is so important to you. You might be surprised at how well this is received, and at how well they come around about your home business if you are able to talk to them about it and explain exactly what you are doing and why you love it so much. You also might find yourself with a partner, if you make it a learning experience and if you show them why you are so interested in it. It could turn out to be a family business after all! Having A Financial Plan for Your Home BusinessCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comLet’s face it, having a home business isn’t all easy. You might think that you are embarking on one of the easiest adventures of your life, and that you are going to be able to simply sit back and watch the money make itself. However, you should know very well that this is simply not the case all of the time. When you are starting a home business, you are going to find that there are so many things to do that it appears to be a bit overwhelming at times. Also, you might find that there is some of the home business aspects that you just aren’t able to do, and this might end up making you frustrated. By far the hardest part of starting up a home business is dealing with the money situation. In order to keep your head, and to keep your business afloat, there are some things that you should think about and plan for ahead of time. Money Plan First of all, the most important thing that you can do when you are starting up a home business is to make sure that you have the money that it is going to take to start the business. This means that you either are not going to be able to quit the job that you have until you have money saved up, or you are going to have to keep working while you start your home business. Either way, you cannot start a business with nothing in the bank because no matter what business you are starting, there are going to be start up fees that you have to be sure to figure out how to pay. Also, you must always keep in mind that while you are starting a home business you are going to have to find a way to feed your family and take care of the other expenses. The best thing that you can do, therefore, is to make sure that you have started your business before you have quit your other job. This might mean working harder than you thought you’d have to work, and taking more time out of your life to work on both of your businesses, but it is going to be worth it in the long run. Also, you need to make sure that both you and your spouse, as well as your children, understand that money is going to be tight for awhile. There are probably lots of ways that your family can cut back on costs, so you should discuss this with your family as well to see what they think they might be able to do and to see what they think they might save while doing it. Be sure that you have your whole family on board, and then be sure that you are nice to them, because chances are that you are going to need their support as you start your home business. Giving Your Kids A JobCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comIf it is summer time, or if your children have a break from school you might find yourself wanting to give them a job in your home business, whether it is to keep them busy, keep them out of trouble, or to get them interested in your home business. No matter what the reason is for you wanting your children to be involved, there are many things that you should think about before you do this, to make sure that you are doing it for the right reasons and so that it doesn’t backfire on you. Right Reasons Sometimes it is hard for us to think about why we want our kids to help us. If your children show no interest in your home business, you might feel bad about this, and you might be tempted to force them to work for you so that they get interested. Remember that this is something that hardly ever works. If you are doing something that your children simply aren’t interested in, forcing them to work for you is going to backfire and you are going to find that the children are even less interested in it. It might be something that you have to let go. On the other hand, if your children have shown an interest, asking them to work for you when they any free time might be a great way to teach them about responsibility. You have several options here if this is why you want them to work for you. First of all, you can use this time to teach them about money by giving them a paycheck. This should, of course, be dependant on the amount of time they put in at your home business, and how well the perform the chores that you ask them to do. No matter what, you should never give your kids something to do that will mess up the entire business if it is done wrong or not done at all. Remember that no matter how responsible your kids seem to be, they are still kids, and because kids are going to be kids, things are going to happen that you might not have any control over. Give them small tasks, and give them tasks that you can either do yourself very easily, or that wont’ matter much if they don’t’ get done. Don’t tell your kids, this, though, because making them feel important is part of teaching them to be responsible. You want to be sure that they think they are a very integral part of the business, yet you want to make what they do less stress on you so that if something goes wrong with what they are supposed to be doing, they haven’t messed up a huge part of your business, and you don’t’ have to take it out on them. Getting The Home Business Plan SetCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comWhen you go to open a home business, there are probably lots of things that you are thinking about, such as where you are going to have your business, how it is going to work the best, and how you are going to make the money that you are setting out to make. This is why a home business plan is going to come in so handy for you. What Is It Basically, a home business plan is a simple outline of the business that you are trying to start up, how you see it working for you, and what kind of outcome you hope to get by having your home business. It is a very important part of becoming a successful home business owner, so it is very vital that you have a concrete plan and that you try to stick to it or change you plan as you go along to change your needs. What Are The Parts When it comes to a home business plan, a good one is going to have several parts that are going to give you an idea of what your business is. The first thing that you need is a general outline of what you plan on doing. Remember that in order to have a successful home business you have to have something to give your clients. This means that you have to either have a service that you can provide them with, or goods that you can sell them. This should be the first thing that you have in your business plan. Also, a business plan needs several things so that you can be sure it is going to work. You have to have an outline of exactly how you are going to make money. You should plan for the amounts that you are going to charge people for various things, and you should have an idea of where your profits are going to come from, in relationship to the costs of running your home business. This is an area that you need to be sure you fully cover in your home business plan, because it might be an easy area to skip over, and that is going to leave you high and dry when it comes to making those profits. Remember that a home business plan is usually also going to include an idea of how you are going to be working your home business. This means where the business will have its headquarters, and how much time you plan on spending at your home business to make sure that it is up and running. You should include how many hours per week you plan on working at your home business, as well as what you plan on doing for your business in order to not lose customers while you aren’t in the office. Finding Time For Your Home BusinessCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comWhen you start a home business, chances are very good that you are going to have to be doing some of the work on it while you are still working somewhere else. This isn’t what you’d rather do, of course everyone would like to quit their jobs and simply start to work for themselves. However, sometimes it is something that you have to do, because if you completely stop working wherever you are working, you might find that you simply don’t’ have the money that you need to actually start your home business. This means that you have to be working at a job you might not like, while starting up a home business as well. Here are some tips to make this more smooth, and to figure out how to find time for your home business while you are still working. Use Down Time Most of the time, you know that there is a lot of down time at work. See if you can talk to your boss about the time that you need to be at work, and see if you can work out an alternate schedule for yourself. Most of the time, if your job performance is based upon the things that you do while you are at work, you can figure out a way to come in early and work through lunch, so that you can get your own work done and are able to leave earlier in the day. If you can work it out with your boss, perhaps you can even do some of your work at home. You know that you can probably get your work done easier at your home, and on your own time so first see if this is an option. Lunch and Breaks Remember that while you are starting up your home business, another great option for you to explore is to work at lunch and through your breaks. There are always going to be small things that you can find yourself doing while you are at your other job, and as long as it doesn’t interfere with your job performance, you should be alright if you want to do some of your work during your breaks. Another thing that you are going to want to be sure to do is make the most out of your evenings and weekends. You might have to talk to your family and your children and make sure that they understand that you are going to be busy for awhile and might not be able to do things as much as you used to. However, if you talk to your family you will find that they are excited at the prospect of you being able to work from home like you have always wanted, and will probably be good about supporting you while you try to get this accomplished. Finding The Right Place For Your Home BusinessCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comWhen you start a home business there are many things that you are going to want to pay attention to, and many things that you want to be sure you are doing so that your home business goes smoothly. One of the important things that you have to be sure you are doing is finding a good spot to have your home business where you aren’t going to run into any trouble. One of the hardest things about having a home business is figuring out where you can have your business that is not going to get in the way of the rest of your life, and is also going to be good for the business. Own Space One of the most important things about finding space for your home business is that you realize that no matter what your business is, it needs its own space. You have to make an area of your home into an area that is just for the business, and not for anything else. This is very important because you have to have a place where you can feel like you are at work, and not at home, even if you are at home. The best way to get your work done is to be able to go to the place where your business is, do what you need to do, and then come back to your home again. With a home business, this might be hard to do, but you can make it work. Find an out of the way spot for your home business. If you are lucky enough to have an extra room that you can afford to dedicate just to the business, this can be a great way to make your business a reality. Otherwise, fine a corner of a room, any room will do, that isn’t being used for anything else. This is very hard to do because our lives are very crowded and full already. However, if you can managed to find a space that is only for your business, you are going to be much happier about it. The next thing that you have to do is to find a way to make this area look like the business. If you are going to be having clients come to your home, this is even more important, but even if you are just working online or over the phone, you can still make your work look like work. This should be a place that is free from other remnants of your life, so that you can be sure that only your business is going on there. This is also very important, as it is one of the best steps you can take towards having your business be professional. Dealing With The Distraction of a Home BusinessCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comA popular trend today is for many to choose to work from their home with a home based business. While working from the home can be a great opportunity there are some unique challenges that you will have to learn to deal with. The biggest challenge you will have to learn to deal with is the amount of distractions that can prevent you from completing your work on time. There is the distraction of running errands, doing laundry and other household chores. In addition, if you have children there can be other distractions as well. Consider a few ways you can deal with these distractions to have a more productive work environment at home. The best thing you can do to avoid distractions is set up a separate office or working area that is away from the commotion of the household. When first starting a home based business many choose to place it either at the dining room table or in other high traffic areas. This can make it difficult to focus on the task at hand and complete the assigned work on time. If you don’t have a separate room where you can place you office then at least try to find an area that has the least amount of distractions. Once you have an office it is very important that you set up specific business hours. This is a very good idea if you have children in the household. You should make sure they realize they cannot disturb you while you are in your office. Sometimes you can have a do not disturb sign. This will allow you to make any client contacts without being disturbed. If you have trouble keeping focused because of distractions then consider creating a to do list everyday. This way you can become focused on finishing a specific amount of tasks by the end of the day and not become distracted by completing other tasks around the house. In addition to this list it can be good to set a deadline for each project you are working on so that you can stay on track. If you have a hard time making yourself stay with deadlines then perhaps you should share them with someone else to help you remain more focused on the deadlines. Focusing on work can only help with distractions so much. You should also take the time to relax from time to time. Make sure you know it is okay to be distracted once in a while. As long as you don’t allow distractions to become a regular occurrence you don’t have to worry. Just make sure your work takes priority. If you work better by reporting your progress to someone then perhaps you should share your goals and objectives with someone in the household to help you focus on your work better. The Right Time to Start a Home BusinessCopyright © Roderick Eash http://www.TheEashSyndicate.comOne might say that it's always the right time to start a home business, but that may not always be true. For instance, if the market is heavy with the kind of business that interests you, you may need to take some extra time in order to build your client base or develop more knowledge of the business in order to give yourself an edge over others who offer the same concept. For example, if you are an accountant by trade, and the market is overloaded with general accountants, you may want to take some time to go back to school and learn something more specialized such as tax accounting, financial accounting, or managerial accounting. Seasons often have an effect on the ability of a new home business's success. If your business involves craft making, you will make out better if you begin your business during a time when the market for that kind of product is booming. For example, you don't want to start a product-run business right after Christmas when everyone is still paying off Christmas debt and waiting to find out if they are going to have to pay taxes. You also don't want to try to sell spring items when spring is almost here because retail stores start selling those items in February. If you start in March or April, people will already have what they want for that year. You have to be cognizant of the trends and know when to open your business. Even if you are already in business, you have to be aware of the high and low seasons so that you can adjust your expenses accordingly. A big mistake many people make is getting bored with their job and quitting to start a home business with no preparation. Even if you have recently been laid off and are collecting unemployment or severance pay, don't jump right into it because you are doomed for failure if you do. Take the time to research the opportunities that are available and relate those to the skills and education level you have before making a choice on a home business idea. It may seem that it will take a lot of time, but doing the research is not that long and difficult a process – a week at most if you know exactly where to look. One of the major drawbacks to the success of a home business even if the season is right is that of the state of the economy. No matter what business you have or your knowledge base, if the economy is in the throes of a downward trend, any new business that enters the market is taking a chance. It is never good business practice to start a new business during a depressed economy.
