Quality content and quality incoming links are two of the major factors that help a search engine determine the quality and reputation of any given website. Each site meeting the criteria has the opportunity to experience a high page ranking, without paying for advertising or inclusion on specific search pages.

Search engine marketing can be a boon to smaller companies and if they build their own website, they can hire a company to help optimize it for the search engines, or by visiting the search engines, can obtain the information they look at and how to set up your site on your own, to make it more attractive.

Companies that offer a guarantee should be claiming they can promise your site will be more attractive, increasing its chances of moving up on the list. Unless they own the engine and have control over the requirements to be listed, they cannot fulfill any such promise.

No matter what kind of business you have, you can use the web to your advantage. With some many different kinds of advertising tools that are available, you can expose your business to the greatest number of potential buyers within the largest area possible, namely, the entire world! Whether you have a brick and mortar store with an online presence or you only do business online, you can accomplish the same thing—increasing the number of sales, and thus the profitability of your business.

It wasn't very long ago that the only resources available to business was that of classified advertising and direct marketing, but the Internet has changed all of that. Over the last five years, even internet marketing has taken a new turn from the original online classified advertisement, opt in email list, email groups that were designed only for advertising, and FFA (Free for All) pages that were the start of the trend in online advertising. Those who have had a website for several years probably remember using these types of advertising tools, and in return being bombarded by advertisements for others, including network marketers attempting to recruit you into their network. Though there is still some of the original "sting" going around, the addition of spam laws and spam filters make it less prominent than it was in the end of the 20th century.

When you use the web to approach potential customers to your website, you have to be careful how you do it so that you aren't accused of spamming. You cannot take email addresses of people you know on an email list, for example, and send them literature about your business unless they have given you permission to do so. You can, however, use a guestbook or sign up box on your website to invite people to leave contact information and request further information or product updates. If you are an owner or member of an email list that is devoted to the products or services you provide, and the rules of membership clearly define that advertising is allowed, then you can do so. In this groups, however, keep in mind that it doesn't mean you can contact anyone in their personal email—what it does is give you permission to post your information within the scope of the list. You will still need permission of the person to contact them directly or you are still spamming.

Making sure you submit your website to the search engines for listening is another way to use the web to generate more business. Unless you submit your site to the search engines, searchers cannot find it when they are surfing the web. It's also important to remember that you have to resubmit your site every so often unless the search engine states that you only need to submit one time. Remember, also that the more you pay for this service, the more of an online presence your business will have.

Using search engine marketing to your benefit is not as hard as some marketing experts will want you to believe. At the same time, you will need to have something to offer to the search engines in order to be able to benefit from their business. While this may at times seem like a bit of a hard road to traverse, the savvy business owner knows that there are two basic ways of using search engine marketing to your benefit: you can either buy your way in with a paid placement, or you can pay someone to overhaul your website with goal of making it palatable to the search engines via search engine optimization.

While the former is the easy way in, you have to remember that it is also quite costly, and even if you buy your way, you still need to have the kind of content that is sticky enough to grab the customer’s attention and keep it long enough to either have you make a sale or have you being added to the favorites list so as to be checked out later on. The latter is a slow and costly process, but in the end if will not only earn you a preferred placement in the search engine ranking system but because of your content and ease in navigation it will make consumers more disposed to also doing business with you.

As you are readying your site for search engine marketing, you will further benefit from this activity by increasing the usability of the site. Even though many professional marketing firms may not pay as much attention to this aspect of the business as would behoove them, the stark reality shows that even though a well placed site will generate a lot of traffic, the customers may not stick around to do business. In part this may be due to the site’s simply not being user friendly enough. Thus, to be fully using search engine marketing to your benefit, your customers need to be able to fill out forms on your site if they have more questions or would like additional details; they need to be able to sign up for newsletters or email alerts; naturally, you do want them to be able to make a purchase and – as was the case with an up and coming racing gear company – you do not want an eager consumer to have to pick up a phone to place an order but instead have a full business package enabling you to take orders, receive payments, and send out shipments ready to go.

While these are just a few tips to help you using search engine marketing to your benefit, some of these are sometimes overlooked, and before you spend a lot of money to find out why your paid placement is not giving you the rewards you anticipated, you will do well to rule out your site’s shortcomings first.

Search engines and email marketing aren't the only way to drive customer traffic to your website after all. First of all there is the ever-important business card, which should be kept close at hand at all times, and handed out to everyone you meet. Flyers and newspapers as well as other community media can also help raise awareness of your online business. By adding local advertising methods to your online efforts, you can greatly enhance your chance of success.

Business Cards

Business cards are the first must-have of every businessperson whether online or offline, big corporation or smallest home-based business. A great many companies offer inexpensive but professional looking business cards in a variety of styles appropriate for any type of occupation. If you have a good quality printer and a little know-how, you can attempt to print out your own business cards. Both methods cost about the same when you consider card stock and printer ink, so it's really a personal preference which you choose.

If you decide to order your business cards from a professional printing company, you next need to choose whether you will go to a storefront business or order your cards online. Personally, online is probably less expensive and just as good quality but you will have to wait for the cards to be shipped to you. If you're the impatient type a storefront might be quicker but you will still have to wait for them to print up and if there is any sort of backlog, that could take awhile too.

Flyers

Flyers can be a help in advertising your business if you carefully consider where to place them. If your product is geared towards a certain age group, college students or senior citizens for example, hang your flyers at locations where individuals in that age range tend to frequent such as universities or senior centers. It is best to get a professional to make the flyers for you since most home printers don't have the capabilities and store bought flyer sheets aren't the greatest. Choose a style that matches the style of your business, professional, elegant, fun and wacky, whatever your business mission stands for.

Press Releases

A highly effective and inexpensive advertising method is press releases. A press release is a short statement you send out to local newspapers and magazines that speaks of your business's mission and the service or product you offer. Press releases don't cost anything but your time unless you hire someone to write it for you, which can be money well spent if you have little experience with press releases.

These avenues are just as trafficked as high volume web sites or search engines and perhaps reach a totally different stock of potential customers as not everyone has access to the internet. Another type of offline marketing is in promotions. Free items to the first one hundred customers, giveaways and similar events are always crowd pleasers. Also, you could try donating things. If you have semis, trailers or the like, let a local marching band use one for a season while they carry your signs or logos around on the sides for promotions.

Putting ads in the newspapers and phone books are another way that offline marketing has proved to be successful. The phone book is an ideal option as it shows people exactly what you offer when they go to look up the service your company provides. Newspaper ads are profitable in that they can often go nationwide. Even local newspapers can generate multiple hits for your business; you just need to find the right one.

Affiliate networks that attract larger clients are very careful to screen out individual network affiliates that may have substandard websites, have been known to promote affiliate merchants in unethical manners, and may have attempted to cheat the system. While it is true that once in a while someone still slips through, the odds are rather small. It does not hurt to once in a while do a random check on affiliate sites to ensure that you like the way the ads are placed.

As you are signing up with an affiliate network, consider the kinds of ad campaigns you want to run. Furthermore, if there is a certain market to which your product is especially appealing, you being able to pinpoint those network affiliates will help in getting your business’ growth on the right track. In addition to the foregoing, by offering lucrative compensation packages you will attract a wide ranger of network affiliates that in turn will work very hard to promote your products and business, perhaps even by canceling their affiliate relationship with another business that may offer a similar product or service.
